Magic City

Exposition
From everyday objects and food from various cultures from my household I build cityscapes. These are representative and fantastic buildings created in my living space. Some of them I based on the Armenian architecture of sacred buildings, which have been built in the same way for thousands of years with recurring design elements. I understand Magic City as a technique of self-exploration and self-portraiture. Everyones’ Magic City would be a snapshot of a time in place in a person’s life, while also synthesizing their socio-cultural and geopolitical experiences and backgrounds.

Self-representation here is a political act and attitude. With Magic City, I want to honor and emphasize that culture emerges from the exchange and blending of influences. Culture is not a matter of course, especially in the case of indigenous peoples who have lost their language and traditions through migration and threats. On the other hand, cultural traditions, especially among Armenians, have often been changed through assimilation. Interior and exterior - architecture and geography and body. The events in Azerbaijan in 2023 are another keyword.

The title alludes to the novel “The Magic City”, 1910, by the English author Edith Nesbit, in whose books children experience adventures through magic and enchantment, that I read as a child. Magic City subverts the orientalist imagery in Nesbit’s stories.

Since 2024 I’ve been working on the sequel called Magic World that will incorporate a theme park and current topics like the underserved LGTBQIA+ community in Armenia.

Erklärung

Aus Alltagsgegenständen und Lebensmitteln aus diversen Kulturkreisen aus meinem Haushalt baue ich Stadtlandschaften. Es entstehen repräsentative und fantastische Gebäude in meinem Wohnraum. Manche von ihnen habe ich an die armenischen sakralen Gebäude angelehnt, welche seit Tausenden mit wiederkehrenden Gestaltungselementen gebaut werden, wobei politische Kräfte sie teilweise gezielt zerstören, oder verfallen lassen.

Der Titel spielt an auf den Kinderroman „The Magic City“ von 1910 der englischen Autorin Edith Nesbit, in deren Büchern Kinder mittels Magie und Zauber Abenteuer erleben. Magic City unterwandert die orientalistische Bildsprache in Nesbits Geschichten.

Meine Magic City, eine Art Selbstportrait, ist zusammengestellt aus den verschiedenen ethnischen communities die Teil meiner Herkunft oder Umgebung sind, und verknüpft meine Biographie mit der Weltgeschichte. Beim Bauen dieser Magic City habe ich mich verbunden gefühlt mit meinen Angehörigen, denjenigen, die im Osmanischen Reich verfolgt und ermordet wurden, und denjenigen die überlebt und nach Bulgarien geflohen sind. Im Nachwende-Ost-Berlin wuchs ich mit dem Status „Ausländerin“ auf, und versuche inzwischen meinen Platz zwischen den Kulturen einzunehmen, und der einst erfahrenen Rassifizierung mit Selbstermächtigung zu begegnen. Jedes Portrait erzaehlt eine kleine Geschichte als Architektur. Spekulatius verwandelt sich in Betonfassaden, Zuckerdosen in Kuppeln, Dächer in Fladenbrot, Speisekammer und Stadtansicht nähern sich einander an. Seit 2017 habe ich gebastelten Objekten, und gekauften und selbstgebackenen Speisen Magic Cities gebaut, die immer nur temporär existieren.
