Der Titel “I Look Up, I Look Down” ist ein Zitat aus Alfred Hitchcocks “Vertigo”, in dem die Hauptfigur Scottie diesen Satz auf einem Hocker stehend ausruft, kurz bevor er benommen von der Höhe in die Arme seiner Freundin Midge fällt.
Wenn ich mehrmals täglich den Raum zwischen dem modernen und dem historischen Teil des Schulgebäudes durchschritt, folgten meine Blicke automatisch den vorbeigehenden Studenten, die auf der transparenten Treppe über bzw. unter mir entlanggingen. Der installierte Balken verbindet die Blickpunkte von oben nach unten und verdichtet das Erleben des Raumes.

The title is a citation of, and quote from, Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, in which the main character Scottie, played by James Stewart, exclaims this sentiment from the top of a stool right before falling dizzied and exasperated by the height into his buddy’s Midge’s arms.
When using the hallway of my university everyday multiple times to traverse the space between the modern and the historic part of the school building, my glances automatically followed the passing students that were walking above respectively below me on the transparent stairs. The installed beam connects the points of views from upstairs to downstairs and condenses the spatial experience.
